Corpus Christi & South Padre Island — Two Great RV Destinations

Located about 175 miles apart, both destinations offer incredible RV camping — but each delivers a distinct experience for South Texas travelers.

Corpus Christi / North Padre Island

  • Atmosphere: Quiet, family-friendly coastal city adjacent to Padre Island National Seashore. Great access to museums, restaurants, and urban amenities.
  • Beaches: Miles of pristine, undeveloped beach at Padre Island National Seashore — excellent for birdwatching, wildlife, and solitude.
  • Activities: Texas State Aquarium, USS Lexington Museum, Art Museum of South Texas, fishing, surfing, and kayaking on the bay.
  • Cost: More affordable — lower cost of living and less tourist-driven pricing than South Padre.

South Padre Island

  • Atmosphere: Lively, resort-driven island — famous for Spring Break but very family-friendly year-round. Wider variety of shops and beachside entertainment.
  • Beaches: Scenic with clear, pretty water — consistently ranked among Texas's cleanest beaches.
  • Activities: Dolphin cruises, horseback riding on the beach, helicopter tours, South Padre Island Birding & Nature Center, and Sea Turtle, Inc. rescue center.
  • Cost: More expensive, especially for beachfront stays. Economy is heavily tourism-driven.

Which Should You Choose?

Corpus Christi / North Padre Island: Ideal if you want a laid-back, nature-focused experience — perfect for wildlife, quiet camping, and city access.

South Padre Island: Ideal if you're looking for a lively resort atmosphere with clearer water, more tourist entertainment, and a tropical beach feel.

Outdoor Activities Beyond the Beach

In Corpus Christi

  • Water Sports: World-class windsurfing and kite-surfing on Corpus Christi Bay. Guided kayaking tours in the bay and local estuaries.
  • Wildlife & Nature: South Texas Botanical Gardens, Hans and Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge boardwalk, Padre Island National Seashore stargazing and sea turtle hatchling releases in summer.
  • Fishing: Year-round fishing from piers, jetties, Laguna Madre, and deep-sea Gulf charters. Bay dolphin tours are also popular.

On South Padre Island

  • Water Sports: Jet skiing, snorkeling, parasailing, and boat rentals on the calm Laguna Madre.
  • Wildlife: South Padre Island Birding & Nature Center, Sea Turtle Inc. rescue center, and dolphin watch cruises.
  • Adventure: Horseback riding through sand dunes, sandcastle-building lessons, and fishing at the Queen Isabella Pier.

RV Camping at Padre Island National Seashore

Padre Island National Seashore is one of the best RV destinations in Texas — with developed campgrounds and miles of free primitive beach camping.

Developed Campgrounds

  • Malaquite Campground: 48 semi-primitive sites for tents and RVs. Paved pads, shade shelters, grills, flush toilets, cold-water rinse showers, RV dump station, and freshwater fill. Gulf beach walkway access. Best for larger RVs.
  • Bird Island Basin Campground: On the Laguna Madre side — ideal for windsurfing, kayaking, and fishing. Gravel pads, chemical toilets. Best for smaller RVs and van campers.

Primitive Beach Camping

  • North Beach: 1.5-mile stretch, free with a valid park entrance pass. 2WD often sufficient. No facilities — be fully self-sufficient.
  • South Beach: 50+ miles of open beach camping. First 5 miles accessible by 2WD; beyond requires 4WD. No facilities. Truly remote.
  • Yarborough Pass: Inland Laguna Madre access. High-clearance 4WD required. Very quiet and primitive.

Primitive beach camping is free — but a 7-day or annual park entrance pass is required. Developed sites charge a separate nightly fee.

More Campgrounds Near Corpus Christi

  • Mustang Island State Park: Beachfront camping just south of Corpus Christi with 5 miles of drive-up beach access and 48 sites with water/electric hookups. Hot showers and restrooms. Great for fishing, paddling, and beachcombing. Reservations recommended.
  • Lake Corpus Christi State Park: About 40 minutes inland. Full-hookup sites (water, electric, sewer), showers, and fire rings on a 21,000-acre reservoir. Ideal for swimming, fishing, and boating.

Tips for RV Beach Camping

  • Always check the weather forecast and tide charts before driving onto a beach.
  • Reduce tire pressure to 15–20 PSI for better sand traction.
  • Bring all water, food, and supplies — no hookups on primitive sites.
  • 4WD is strongly recommended beyond the 5-mile marker on South Beach.
  • Camp above the high-tide line to avoid overnight flooding.
