Jutting 1,240 feet out into the Gulf of Mexico, Bob Hall Pier is one of the most popular spots on Padre Island and one of the best places on the Texas coast to spend an afternoon. Located within the 400-acre Padre Balli Park on the north end of Padre Island, the pier offers visitors a combination of great fishing, surf watching, and pure Gulf Coast atmosphere that's hard to find anywhere else.
Fishing off Bob Hall Pier is a South Texas tradition. The pier attracts a regular crowd of anglers who come for redfish, sheepshead, flounder, Spanish mackerel, and a long list of other species that run through the surf zone throughout the year. There's a bait shop near the base of the pier, and if you don't have your own gear, rentals are available. Even if you don't fish, watching the action on a productive afternoon is entertaining in itself.
The pier is also a favorite observation point for surfers and surf watchers. Corpus Christi and Padre Island have a legitimate surf culture, and the waters off Bob Hall regularly produce rideable waves, particularly in the fall and winter when Gulf swells pick up. Watching experienced surfers work through the break from the elevated vantage point of the pier is one of those low-key pleasures that makes a beach day feel complete.
The surrounding Padre Balli Park has picnic areas, restrooms, and parking, making it a good base for a full day out. Swimming is popular along the beach adjacent to the pier, and the sand is wide and clean. On a clear day, the views from the end of the pier looking back toward the Corpus Christi skyline are spectacular.
For guests at Colonia del Rey RV Park, Bob Hall Pier is about a 20-minute drive down to the island โ a perfect day trip or afternoon excursion. Go early in the morning during the week for the best parking and the least crowds, or head out in the late afternoon to catch the sunset over the city skyline. Either way, it's a South Texas experience you'll want to repeat.
